Level 40-44

You've probably heard of Madeleine Casey. Don't let her job as a television soap star fool you. When it comes to the Carnival of Shadows, she has the early dirt. She loves to work with heroes, especially ones skilled with magic. Madeleine can provide Relic and Focus Enhancements.

Madeleine really is a 'Live Wire!'

If you are looking for someone who has information on Nemesis, you should speak to Maxwell Christopher. He is a high level FBSA agent. Maxwell has access to Invention and Gadget enhancements.

Mister Christopher is a good agent, even if he is a bit gruff.

Janet Kellum is a brainiac FBSA agent. I have heard that she is high on Countess Crey's hit list. She likes working with science heroes, and she has access to Invention and Genetic Alteration Enhancements.

Janet won't steer you wrong. Just watch your step, because she's determined to go after the countess.

Tina Macintyre works for the Portal Corporation. She has the most current information on the trouble out on Peregrine Island caused by unstable dimensional technology. She can offer Gadget and Relic Enhancements.

The dimensional instabilities on Peregrine Island are getting worse by the day, Character. Be ready for anything.

Angus McQueen is an FBI agent who the Rikti attempted to convert while he was investigating their organization. He has more information on the Rikti that no one can match... or confirm. He also has Relic, Focus, Gadget, Invention, and Genetic Alteration enhancements.

Angus was not unaffected by the Rikti, but he managed to resist a transformation that few have been able to.

Level 45-50

Crimson is the second half of the most efficient spy tandem the government has available. He is just as determined as his partner to take out the Malta group. He can provide Focus and Genetic Alteration Enhancements.

Indigo and her partner Crimson are very different personalities but they make a deadly team.

Information

Stealth Operative

Indigo may look like an innocent young woman, but if you peer closely into her eyes, you'll see that she's no ingenue. A master of stealth and intrigue, Indigo made a name for herself in the intelligence community by being the first to discover the villainous organization known as Arachnos. Currently she and her partner, Crimson, are assigned to look into the workings of the mysterious Malta Group. Indigo can't always play it straight with her hero contacts, but she tries to tell them anything that will give them an advantage in battle.

Wrong Side

I don't think it's safe for either of us to be seen talking to each other. Maybe if you were more like me I might reconsider.

Missing Melvin and the Mysterious Malta Group (40-44)

Souvenir

A painting called Gentlemen of Malta

This painting, showing the 17 men who would form the illegal international conspiracy is a reminder to you of the adventure you called:

Melvin and the Mysterious Malta Group

It all began when Indigo told you that the Malta Group had kidnapped one of their informants, a man named Melvin Langley. You tried to rescue him, but the Malta Group had already spirited him away and you only found his computer. You found out that Melvin had been researching the Might for Right act of the 50's.

Fearing that Malta would start to tie up loose ends by eliminating people Melvin Langley had talked to, you reacted quickly to news of the abduction of Jim 'Thunderhead' Bartlett and rescued him from the Malta Group. He told you that Melvin had interviewed him about the transition years in the superhuman community after the end of the Second World War, and how many heroes had left the service for civilian life.

You next stopped the Malta Group from destroying the office where Melvin Langley worked, and discovered that Melvin had been a research file clerk for the CIA.

With Melvin still missing, Crimson had you begin a clever operation to make Malta uncertain of just how much Melvin Langley really knew. You first rescued a woman who Melvin had employed as a proofreader from the Knives of Artemis. She gave you a copy of Melvin's last report, which you returned to Crimson. He in turn gave you an altered copy of that report to plant. With Malta confused about Melvin, it brought you more time.

You next rescued a British politician named Lester Chesterford, whom Melvin had interviewed about the secret intelligence agency conference on the Island of Malta held in the late 60's after the Might for Right act was overturned.

You next investigated an abandoned office where Malta Group agents had set themselves up. You found some interesting information the agents were there to destroy, information that showed that millions of dollars had been secretly embezzled from intelligence agencies world wide for decades and funneled into other projects.

You thought you got a break on Melvin Langley's location and jumped a group of Malta Operatives who were about to move a prisoner. Instead of Melvin, you found a man named Art Returio, who had been targeted for recruitment by force by the Malta Group due to his power to make someone forget the last few minutes of their lives. Art described the chilling details of how the Malta Group treated meta-humans.

With Melvin still in Malta's hands, Crimson decided to change tactics. Originally he and Indigo had hoped that Melvin Langley would return to a normal life when this was done, but by now that was clearly going to be impossible. The new strategy began by sending you to recover some of Melvin's notes from a trip he took to the island of Malta and to make sure that the Malta Group knew about it. After you recovered the notes, Indigo told you that she felt responsible for all of this, as she and Crimson had been deliberately trying to lead Melvin on the road to the Malta Group by engaging his curiosity so that they could recruit him as an information gathering resource. They'd never meant for him to get in so much trouble, though.

You next rescued an old Russian spy named Mavra Varvarinsky from Malta captors, and found an encoded listing of the Malta Group's detention centers in the city. Melvin was sure to be in one of them. Madame Varvarinsky also told you about how a mysterious intelligence group of unknown origin decimated Russia's spy network in the 60's with brutal efficiency.

You next attacked a former government computer lab that had been taken over by Malta as an information clearing house. You found a great deal of information, including a clue to Melvin's location.

You struck a meeting between Crey staff and the Malta Group to double-check the deductions Indigo had made based on the information you gathered.

With the information double-checked, you were able to attack the disused Council base where the Malta Group had been hiding Melvin Langley. With Melvin free at last and more determined to fight Malta than ever, Crimson took you aside and explained the shocking truth: He'd known about Melvin's location for almost the whole time, but kept the situation going in order to make sure that neither Indigo nor Melvin had been compromised by the Malta Group. He didn't apologize, but he did explain that the reason he used you that way was because he could trust you to do the right thing. Indigo told you that she didn't blame Crimson for all of that, and then thanked you for working with her and for trusting her throughout the operation. With heroes like you on their side, she said, the battle against Malta would never be lost. Find the people kidnapped by the Knives of Artemis

Briefing

I have an investigation into some missing people for you, Character, and while I can't tell you many specifics this time, that's really more because I just don't know what's going on. The Knives of Artemis have been abducting people, seemingly at random. Men and women in positions of power, or just normal family folk who are grabbed by Knives and never seen again. I can't figure out why. It isn't part of any contracts I know. The only lead I have is that the Knives occasionally request a few Malta soldiers as guards for something. I've traced where one group of guards went, and I'd like you to investigate. With some luck, you might even find the people kidnapped by the Knives of Artemis before anything happens to them.

Mission acceptance

I don't know why the Knives have picked these targets, but the people they take don't seem to come back. If there are any people there, find them and get them home.

Unnecessary solicitation

Same as mission acceptance.

Mission Objective(s)

These caves tunnel deep beneath the ground, but you spot telltale signs that others have passed this way recently.

  • Find people abducted by Knives
    • 5 victims to find

You disrupted the rites of the Knives' cult and saved their victims from ritual sacrifice.

Enemies

The Sisterhood of the Huntress
This book illustrates rites and rituals for mystical ceremonies associated with a secret society called 'The Sisterhood of the Huntress.' A cursory examination shows elements of moon worship, ritualized hunting of human beings, and violent human sacrifices. Though the book is filled with hateful screeds against all men and any woman who is not a member of the Sisterhood, you can see evidence it was probably twisted from the dogma of a once gentler fertility cult.

Debriefing

Let me make sure I understand this. You found a cult within the Knives of Artemis that have been performing human sacrifices? Okay, that's just weird. I don't know if this 'Sisterhood of the Huntress' is a new addition, or a tradition I've never heard about, but it's important that we now know it exists. I'll update Crimson, it may make a few things fit together. Thanks again, Character. Not just for the information, either. You saved a lot of lives tonight. I guess heroes like you do that a lot, though.

Well, at least the Sisterhood of the Huntress is pretty equal opportunity. Man or woman, if you're not one of the Knives, then they'll find a reason to sacrifice you. Makes me glad I got out of that sorority of killers early.

Destroy the mysterious shipment

Briefing

I have a little something for you to do. There have been a swarm of shipments building up at a warehouse that have caught my attention. I can't tell you what I think they are or why, but I want the containers intercepted with extreme force before they can be picked up by their owners. Will you destroy the shipment for me?

Mission acceptance

You're so helpful. There should be about 10 crates in all. Each of them should also have a shipping label. I want you to destroy the crates, but keep the labels for me. They could prove very useful for tracking down their source.

Unnecessary solicitation

Same as mission acceptance.

Mission Objective(s)

This warehouse is the place. If Indigo is right, you should find the crates you're looking for, and maybe even their owners.

  • Destroy the shipment
    • 10 Crates to destroy

You destroyed a shipment of spare parts for Malta's Titans.

Enemies

Debriefing So it was spare parts for their Titans. I knew it. With these shipping papers, I may be able to get a line on who they're buying spare parts from these days. Thank you, Character.

RSVP for an ambush

Briefing

I have a little something for you to do, Character. It's kind of complicated, but because of that it's really pretty simple. You see, certain mutual friends of ours are quite upset that some of their plans have been discovered, so they've decided to set a trap. However, I know that it's a trap, and I must assume that they know I know it's a trap. So really, it's more of an invitation. An invitation to an ambush. Shall I send your RSVP?

Mission acceptance

Just so you know, they've set up a whole 'kidnapped celebrity' cover as the draw for you. There aren't any, so it's not something to worry about. However, there are a whole lot of dangerous people waiting to hurt you very badly. Your goal is simple: take them all out. Oh, and do play along some if you get the chance. That should help to really freak them out.

Unnecessary solicitation

Remember, there aren't actually any kidnapped celebrities or anything. Just a bunch of people who want to hurt you. Defeat all of them and you're done.

Mission Objective(s)

Since you know this ambush is coming, it doesn't seem like much of a surprise.

  • Defeat all ambushers

You defeated the trap that had been laid for you.

Debriefing

Nice work, Character. While you were out springing the trap, I spent a bit of time planting confusing counter-evidence indicating that there was no way you could have known it was a trap. It should keep them running in circles for a while trying to figure out if they have a leak or if you've just been lucky. But then, that's part of the fun of dealing with these sorts of conspiratorial paranoids. Just give them few clues and they'll invent all of your plots for you.

Stop the Malta Group from smearing the good name of a rising hero

Briefing

I can't tell you who and I can't tell you why, but our mutual friends are going to set a trap of sorts for an up and coming hero. They won't be out to hurt or kill her, just to badly discredit her. I hate that kind of thing. I may be a cover operative, but that doesen't mean I relish dirty tricks. So, since I know it's about to happen, I'd like you to stop them from smearing the good name of a rising hero.

The timing on this is going to be tight, though. You have to stop this plan before the heroine arrives, because if she finds out about Malta right now, they may just kill her. She's pretty punctual, so you'll only have about 90 minutes at the most.

Mission acceptance

Here's the set-up:
Our young heroine's contact is about to get an anonymous tip that will send her to investigate a possible Sky Raiders office invasion. When she gets there, Malta Group operatives are going to jump her, knock her out, and then make it look like she failed to stop a group of Skulls and got everyone in there killed. Any protest she makes about 'mysterious commandos' will be ridiculed as attempts to save her image.

Of course, what they don't know is that we know this is all about to happen. So, your goal is to rescue the people the Malta Group plans to kill, disarm the bombs they're using to cover their presence, and take out the commanding officer in charge of the operation. All before the heroine arrives on the scene in about an hour and a half. See? Easy!

Unnecessary solicitation

Mission Objective(s)

As you rush in the scene, you have to wonder if you were on the receiving end of this kind of smear attack earlier in your career. Maybe there's another hero out there you owe your good name to.

    • 6 bombs to disarm

Debriefing

You may have saved more than lives today, Character, you may have saved someone's soul. Smear tactics like this are pretty popular in the Malta Group as a way to leave super-powered people down and desperate. That way they can later come in and pick up the pieces, recruiting the victim as an asset of the organization that just destroyed their career. They'll plant false evidence for blackmail, even threaten lives and loved ones. They like to leave you broken, then take you in, without ever revealing they're the ones who hurt you in the first place. The sick part is, they do all of this and they still think they're the good guys. I told you that you'd be fighting some very bad people if you helped me out.

Capture Mr. Strauss and prevent the Nemesis Army from getting a hold inside the Malta Group

I'm looking for someone, Character, and I think you can help me. Only I know exactly where this person is, and that's the reason I need you to find him. He works for those mutual friends of ours, and goes by the code name Eagle Green. What those friends don't know is that he has a second employer whom he still works for under the name Lt. Westley Strauss. Also unbeknownst to them, but beknownst to me, Mr. Strauss is about to report to that alternate employer right now. Since this alternate employer is the Nemesis Army, I think it could be bad if he's allowed to tell them all that they want to know. So, I want you to capture Mr. Strauss and prevent the Nemesis Army from getting a hold inside the Malta Group.

Let me warn you, though, there won't be much time to pull this off. You'll have maybe 90 minutes before Mr. Strauss takes off.

Mission acceptance:

I've got the spot all laid out for you. It probably won't be anything too posh, but it should be very well protected by Nemesis Army forces. Your target is Westley Strauss and whomever else is involved in his case. Now all you have to do is get there, fight or sneak your way past a platoon or three of the Nemesis Army, and wrap up Mr. Strauss. Easy!

Unnecessary solicitation:

All you have to do is get to the spot I've marked, fight or sneak your way past a platoon or three of the Nemesis Army, and wrap up Mr. Strauss in about 90 minutes. Easy!

Mission Objective(s)

Indigo's information is infallible as always. This innocuous office isn't innocent, but is actually a staging ground for the Nemesis Army.

  • Defeat Strauss & his handlers
    • 90 minute time limit

You captured Westley Strauss and prevented the Nemesis Army from learning anything.

Debriefing

Very well done, Character. The Nemesis Army likes to get their hands into everything, and the last thing I want is for them to start trying to manipulate another major group. Whether they succeed or are discovered, everyone else would lose in the end.

Stop the Knives of Artemis from massacring a law firm

Briefing

I've got another job for you, Character. A very nasty bit of business that's sure to leave a lot of people dead and even more lives ruined. I can't tell you how I know about this, or who's involved, but the Knives of Artemis are about to do a bit of dirty work for their employers. The Knives have been hired to eliminate a small legal firm called Beecham & Becksley that has a fair bit of history. Their plan is to massacre everyone and then pin it on another group. I want you to stop the Knives of Artemis from massacring that law firm.

The Knives work to a pretty tight time table, so you probably won't have more than 60 minutes to save that firm.

Mission acceptance

The Knives of Artemis are top-notch mercenaries, Character. They're very brutal and they're very thorough, but they are mercenaries. So if they think the operation's going badly, they'll pull out. If you can upset their plans, it should disrupt their time table enough to make them quit the operation. In order to do that, you'll need to find the people they've rounded up and free them, and disarm the firebombs they're going to use to gut the place and cover their tracks. All in 60 minutes. Easy!

Unnecessary solicitation

The Knives will call the operation and retreat if you disturb their plans. You'll need to rescue the people they've rounded up and disarm their bombs.

Mission Objective(s)

No one else in this building seems to be aware of the Knives' attack. The law office of Beecham & Becksley was their only target, and they've struck with surgical precision.

  • Disrupt Knives' attack - 1:00:00
    • 3 victims to save
    • 4 bombs to disarm

I'm glad you were able to save Beecham & Becksley, Character. They have a long history in the often obscure field of meta-human civil rights. Fight Malta agents in Peregrine Island

Briefing

I need you to get and hold the attention of the Malta Group for a little while. Nothing to complicated, just fight their agents on the ground in Peregrine Island. They shouldn't be hard to find there, so this should be pretty easy. Aside from all the fighting and stuff.

'Work to reduce the numbers of the Malta operatives deployed in Paragon City'

Briefing

I have a message from Crimson asking that you quote: 'Work to reduce the numbers of the Malta Operatives deployed in Paragon City,' end quote. He didn't give me any more information, but then if he had I probably couldn't pass it on to you anyway. We have to keep our secrets in this kind of thing if we want to stay safe.

Mission acceptance

I'll send Crimson word that you agreed to help. He didn't specify any zones of the city in particular, so I guess anywhere is fair game. Good luck.

Notes

  • From her background information and conversations throughout her story arc, it is revealed Indigo used to be a part of the Knives of Artemis. This can be directly seen in her powerlist (link below).
  • Shadow Spider appears to be her duplicate in Arachnos, and much like Indigo, was a former member of the Knives. Other things she shares are the same career (stealth/intelligence/infiltration specialist), as well as the same powersets.
