Overview

The Hollows is a Hazard Zone in City of Heroes. The Hollows was added as a zone in Issue 2. Prior to Issue 16, a hero needed to be at least Security Level 5 to enter.

This hazard zone is an outlet of Eastgate Bay in Paragon City. After the Rikti War, this section of the city was sealed off to normal traffic, which made it a haven for criminals such as the Trolls, Hellions, Skulls, The Lost and the Outcasts. In recent months, the city has granted limited access to the zone for heroes of the appropriate security level (5 and up) in an effort to retake it from the villain groups that now inhabit it. The deeper into the Hollows you go, the tougher the gangs can be, and the extensive cave networks in the area are rumored to lead to an underground city controlled by the Circle of Thorns. Recent reports indicate an increasing number of Coralax and Hydra now inhabit the Red River area.

Note: The Hollows is an optional zone. While all heroes are referred to contacts in the Hollows, they may speak to Wincott and return to their regular contacts if they like. Heroes may miss out on important story information, temporary powers, and/or badges if they skip the regular contacts in this level range (though most content is available via flashback later on.)

Hollows Reconnaissance Officer (Atlas Park Entrance)
(2476, 0, -3822)

You have arrived in The Hollows, which is considered a Hazard zone as you can tell by the big SWAT entrance behind you. However, under the constant supervision of the PPD, only certain regions tend to be more dangerous. Don't let that lull you into a false sense of security; you can bet that if you should stray from the pack, that'll be the perfect time for an ambush. Keep alert and come back here if you get in over your head.
See my report for more information. It should give you an idea what to expect:
RECONNAISSANCE REPORT
*** Approved Use Only ***
History: Years ago, the Trolls wanted to carve out more territory but were having problems above-ground so they took their business underground and found the residential community of Eastgate as their location. Armed with explosives, they began their work, not realizing that there was already extensive cave warrens beneath this area of Paragon City. The initial blasts destabilized a large area and collapsed a section of the zone into itself - this event became known as The Hollowing. Soon after, the Outcasts and Circle of Thorns moved in. Over recent years, additional Villain Groups (even some from the Rogue Isles) have made their way into The Hollows.
Hostiles Strength: Levels 5 through 15
Suggested Squad Parameters: 1 to 5-person teams
Highlights:

It is believed that these cave guardians are connected to the Devouring Earth in some way.
Talshak the Mystic provides a Task Force to rescue David Wincott's child, who has been taken to the deadly caverns.
  • "Grendel's Gulch"
This huge bowl-shaped indentation is littered with large packs of Trolls and Rock Men.

Exploration Badges

File:Badge tourist 01.png Parapsychologist

These hills are home to some of the Circle's most secret rites. Very few are allowed to leave after venturing here.

File:Badge tourist 01.png Seeker of Monsters

Grendel's Gulch was named after the Trolls former leader, Grendel, who was defeated by Atta in a contest of strength on this spot.

File:Badge tourist 01.png Geologist

This spot marks the first sighting of the strange, rock-like creatures known as Pumicites.

File:Badge tourist 01.png Backwoodsman

These woods have cropped up at an alarming rate since the Hollowing. Many believe the dramatic growth rate of the trees is due to the area being saturated with mystical residue from the Circle's spells.

File:Badge tourist 01.png Gangland Fury

Since the Hollowing, these streets have turned into a war zone between the Trolls and the Outcasts. Only the constant vigilance of heroes keeps this conflict from turning into a bloodbath.
